Claude Duet explained: Anthropic's proactive AI agent that messages you first

TL;DR

Anthropic announced Claude Duet as a research preview on 21 October 2026. It sends a morning brief from Gmail, Slack and the other apps you connect, checks in every few hours, works on its own cloud computer while your laptop is closed, and asks before it sends, pays, signs or deletes anything. There is no separate price: it is included in Claude Pro ($20/mo) and Max (from $100/mo) and shares the plan's usage limits. Today it is a waitlist for US Pro and Max subscribers, and it is not open in the UAE yet.

Claude Duet is a proactive agent app from Anthropic, announced as a research preview on 21 October 2026. Instead of waiting for a prompt, it sends you a short brief each morning on the most important items across the apps you connect, keeps tabs on them during the day and messages you only when something needs you. It runs on its own cloud computer, so it keeps working with your laptop closed, and it asks before it sends, pays, signs or deletes anything. There is no separate price: it is included in Claude Pro and Max. Right now it is a waitlist for US Pro and Max subscribers, which means I cannot use it from Dubai yet, so this post is built from Anthropic's announcement, product page and pricing page, checked on 23 October 2026. What Claude Duet actually does

Anthropic describes it as an agent that comes to you with what needs your attention. It is a separate app on iOS and Android, plus claude.ai on the web, with one ongoing conversation by text or voice. It reuses what your Claude account already has: memory, skills and connectors such as Gmail, Slack and Google Calendar. Each morning it sends a brief across those connected apps, and through the day it checks them every few hours, not in real time, because checking nonstop would use up your plan's limits much faster. Anthropic is open about the rough edges: it may misread a thread or miscalibrate what is urgent, and it can miss something that arrives between check-ins.

Its own cloud computer, with your laptop closed

The part that separates Duet from a chatbot is the virtual machine. Duet has its own cloud computer with its own browser, so it does not need your laptop or phone to be on. Anthropic's examples include building dashboards, sales forecasts, decks and web apps, scheduling meetings, finding unpaid invoices and drafting reminders, and preparing payroll for review. It messages you when a task is done or needs review. One limit for now: it cannot show you its browser yet, and Anthropic says personal errands such as booking tickets are not as strong as the work tasks.

The approval step is the whole point

Before Duet sends a message, makes a payment, signs a document or deletes anything, it shows you exactly what it is about to do and waits for your approval. A few actions stay off-limits even if you approve them, such as trading securities or moving money between accounts. You can disconnect any app at any time. My safe rule from the guide: let Duet read and draft, and approve every send, payment and signature yourself. If the inboxes you would connect hold client data, check your obligations before you connect them, and connect only the accounts the job needs.

Claude Duet price: nothing extra on Pro and Max

There is no separate price. Duet is included in Claude Pro ($20 a month, or $17 a month billed annually) and Claude Max (from $100 a month), and it uses the same usage limits as the rest of Claude. That matters more than it sounds: background checks count toward those limits, and big tasks such as a financial model or a deck take more model turns, so heavy Duet use on Pro can eat the plan. Duet is built around Claude Opus 5.5, released on 22 September 2026, which Anthropic calls its new leading model. That claim is Anthropic's own, not an independent benchmark.

ONE TACTIC A WEEK

One tactic a week. No filler.

Claude Duet vs Grok Bot vs OpenAI dots, with dates

The reel's price comparison only holds if you date it. OpenAI dots launched on 29 September 2026 on plans from $100 a month (ChatGPT Pro tiers and Business Premium seats). Grok Bot launched on 11 August 2026 on $120 to $300 plans, but as of 23 October 2026 it starts at $30 a month, which is roughly the price of Claude Pro. Meta's Muse agent, which the press also compares Duet to, launched on 8 September 2026 with a free tier, per Axios. So the honest line is not that rivals cost $100 and Duet is cheap; it is that Duet adds no charge to a plan you may already pay for.

Claude Duet waitlist: who can get it today

As of 23 October 2026 it is waitlist only, starting with US Claude Pro and Max subscribers. Team and Enterprise plans are not included yet, and it is not open in the UAE yet. The waitlist page is Anthropic's public product page, so anyone can join it, but non-US accounts will not get access for now. There is also no Anthropic GitHub repo for Duet; the claude-duet repos you find on GitHub are unrelated projects riding the name, so do not install anything that calls itself the Duet repo.

How to prepare from anywhere

Duet reuses what your Claude account already knows, so you can get ready before access arrives. Join the waitlist on Anthropic's page. Connect the apps you would hand it (Gmail, Google Calendar, Slack) as Claude connectors. Turn on memory and add the skills you use every week. Then write down three recurring tasks you would delegate, with the approval you want on each. The first brief I plan to ask for once I have access: each morning, brief me on the three things across Gmail, Slack and my calendar that need a decision from me today, draft replies, but never send, pay or sign without asking.
