The AI startup stack: 14 tools, their real prices and the honest monthly bill (checked Oct 2026)

By Hammad Yousuf · 18 October 2026

The short answer: about $21 a month while you build a personal prototype, and about $41 a month once you charge customers, plus card fees.

The honest monthly bill

The honest monthly bill for the AI startup stack, by stage
Personal prototype (not charging anyone)Claude Pro $20 + a .com at $11.48 for year one (about $0.96 a month). Everything else on free tiersabout $21
Same, Claude billed yearlyClaude Pro $200 up front (Anthropic lists it as $17 a month) + the domainabout $18
Running it as a business (taking payments)+ Vercel Pro $20, because the free Hobby plan is non-commercial onlyabout $41 + card fees
Business, year twoThe .com renews at $18.48 + $0.20 ICANN fee ($18.68, about $1.56 a month)about $42 + card fees

Card fees: Stripe charges 2.9% + 30¢ per successful US card payment, with no monthly fee. On a $20 payment that is $0.88 (4.4%), so the fixed 30¢ matters on small prices. In the UAE, Stripe's own page shows 2.9% + AED 1.00 per domestic card payment.

Not in these totals:

  • n8n, unless you self-host it on a machine you already pay for. n8n Cloud Starter was $20 a month billed annually on 18 Oct 2026 (as shown to a UAE visitor).
  • Claude Max (from $100 a month), if Pro's usage limits are too tight for how much you code with it.
  • Upgrades once a free tier runs out (see "When you start paying").
  • Any tax your country adds at checkout.

If every free tier ran out at once, the next plans would add about $116 a month on top of the $41: Supabase Pro $25, Clerk Pro $25, Resend Pro $20, Sentry Team $26 (billed annually) and n8n Cloud Starter $20 (billed annually), plus usage-based Upstash and Qdrant. Most products hit one or two limits long before all of them.

Layer 1: AI coding

1. Claude Pro, with Claude Code

  • What it does: Claude Code is the coding agent that writes, edits and runs your app's code from your terminal or desktop.
  • Price: $20 a month billed monthly, or $17 a month with the annual discount ($200 billed up front).
  • Free plan: Claude Code is not included in the Free plan; it starts on Pro.
  • When you outgrow it: Max starts at $100 a month for people who work with Claude all day.

Layer 2: data

2. Supabase

  • What it does: a Postgres database with auth, file storage, edge functions and the pgvector extension for vector search.
  • Free plan ($0): 2 active projects, 500 MB database, 50,000 monthly active users, 1 GB file storage, 5 GB egress.
  • Catch: free projects are paused after 1 week of inactivity.
  • Next plan: Pro, from $25 a month.

8. Upstash Redis

  • What it does: a hosted Redis for caching and rate limiting.
  • Free plan ($0): 250 MB of data, 500K commands a month, 10 GB bandwidth a month.
  • Next plan: pay as you go at $0.20 per 100K commands.

Source: upstash.com/pricing/redis (checked 18 Oct 2026). Start here: upstash.com/docs/redis/overall/getstarted

9. Qdrant Cloud, or pgvector in Supabase

  • What it does: a vector database that stores embeddings, so your app can search by meaning (AI search, RAG).
  • Free tier (free forever): a single-node cluster with 0.5 vCPU, 1 GB RAM and 4 GB disk, which Qdrant sizes at about 1M 768-dimension vectors.
  • Catch: a free cluster is suspended after 1 week unused and deleted after 4 weeks unused.
  • Open source: the Qdrant engine is Apache-2.0 licensed.
  • Skip it if you can: pgvector runs inside your Supabase database at no extra cost, which is one less tool.

Sources: qdrant.tech/pricing and qdrant.tech/documentation/cloud/create-cluster (checked 18 Oct 2026). Code: github.com/qdrant/qdrant

Layer 3: ship it

6. GitHub

  • What it does: hosts your code and its history (version control), and runs automations with GitHub Actions.
  • Free plan ($0, forever): unlimited public and private repositories, 2,000 Actions minutes a month, 500 MB of Packages storage, and 120 Codespaces core-hours for personal accounts. Private repositories get a smaller feature set than paid plans.

3. Vercel

  • What it does: builds and deploys your app every time you push to GitHub.
  • Hobby ($0): for non-commercial, personal use only. Vercel's fair use guidelines (updated 14 Sep 2026) count any deployment that makes money for anyone involved as commercial, including asking for or processing payments.
  • Pro ($20 a month): includes $20 of usage credit. This is the plan a startup that charges customers needs.
  • Alternative: if your site is static, Cloudflare does not charge for requests to static assets on its free or paid plans (developers.cloudflare.com/pages/functions/pricing).

Sources: vercel.com/pricing, vercel.com/docs/plans/hobby and vercel.com/docs/limits/fair-use-guidelines (checked 18 Oct 2026)

4. Domain: Namecheap (or Cloudflare Registrar)

  • What it does: your .com.
  • Namecheap .com: $11.28 for the first year (25% off $14.98), plus ICANN's $0.20 annual fee, which applies to every registration, renewal and transfer. That is $11.48, or about $0.96 a month. New customers can get the first year for $6.48 with the promo code shown on the page.
  • Renewal: $18.48 a year from year two, plus the $0.20 fee (about $1.56 a month).
  • Price rise: Verisign raises the .com wholesale price from $10.26 to $10.97 on 1 Nov 2026 (reported by Domain Incite, 27 Apr 2026), and Namecheap's own banner warns that .com registry prices are rising. Re-check the price if you buy after 1 Nov.
  • Alternative: Cloudflare Registrar says it does not mark up domain prices; you pay what the registry and ICANN charge (www.cloudflare.com/domains).

10. Cloudflare DNS

  • What it does: authoritative DNS, which points your domain at Vercel, your email provider and the rest.
  • Price: available on all Cloudflare plans, including the free one.

Sources: developers.cloudflare.com/dns (checked 18 Oct 2026) and www.cloudflare.com/plans

Layer 4: users and money

11. Clerk

  • What it does: sign-up, sign-in and user profiles, with prebuilt UI.
  • Hobby (free, no card): 50,000 monthly retained users per app. A user counts as retained when they come back 24 hours or more after signing up.
  • Catch: the free plan shows Clerk branding and has no multi-factor authentication (MFA).
  • Next plan: Pro at $25 a month, or $20 a month billed annually.
  • Skip it if you can: Supabase includes auth, so you may not need both.

Source: clerk.com/pricing (checked 18 Oct 2026). Docs: clerk.com/docs

12. Resend

  • What it does: sends your app's transactional email: welcome emails, receipts, password resets.
  • Free plan ($0): 3,000 emails a month, 100 emails a day, 3 domains.
  • Next plan: Pro at $20 a month for 50,000 emails, with no daily limit.

Source: resend.com/pricing (checked 18 Oct 2026). Docs: resend.com/docs/introduction

5. Stripe

  • What it does: takes card payments and runs checkout.
  • US: 2.9% + 30¢ per successful domestic card payment, +1.5% for international cards, +1% when currency conversion is needed. No setup or monthly fee.
  • UAE: 2.9% + AED 1.00 per successful domestic card payment, +1% for international cards, +1% for currency conversion.
  • Honest note: stripe.com sends visitors to their local pricing page. From the UAE it showed the AED rates above on 18 Oct 2026; the US rate comes from two 2026 fee guides (dodopayments.com/blogs/stripe-fees-calculator and merchantinsiders.com/blogs/stripe-fees). Check stripe.com/pricing from your own country.

Docs: docs.stripe.com/payments/checkout (build it in test mode first)

Layer 5: learn and fix

7. PostHog

  • What it does: product analytics (what users do), session replay, feature flags, surveys and error tracking.
  • Free every month, card or no card: 1M analytics events, 5K session recordings, 1M feature-flag requests, 100K error-tracking exceptions, 1,500 survey responses. The free plan covers 1 project with 1-year data retention.
  • PostHog says 97% of companies use it for free.

Source: posthog.com/pricing (checked 18 Oct 2026). Install: posthog.com/docs/getting-started/install

13. Sentry

  • What it does: tells you when your app throws an error or slows down, with the stack trace.
  • Developer (free): limited to 1 user; 5k errors, 5M tracing spans and 50 session replays.
  • Next plan: Team at $26 a month billed annually, with unlimited users.

Source: sentry.io/pricing (checked 18 Oct 2026). Docs: docs.sentry.io

Layer 6: automate

14. n8n

  • What it does: visual workflows that connect your stack (new sign-up alerts, onboarding emails, reports).
  • Self-hosted Community Edition: free. Without a licence key, a self-hosted install runs as the free Community edition.
  • Licence: the Sustainable Use License. It is "fair-code", not an OSI open-source licence, and allows use for your own internal business purposes.
  • Catch: self-hosting needs a server, and that server is not free.
  • n8n Cloud: Starter was $20 a month billed annually for 2.5K workflow executions on 18 Oct 2026 (as shown to a UAE visitor).

Set it up in this order

  1. GitHub: create a private repository.
  2. Claude Code: on Claude Pro, ask it to scaffold the app in that repository (prompt 2 below).
  3. Supabase: create a project for the database and auth; switch on pgvector only if you need AI search.
  4. Vercel: import the GitHub repository. Hobby is fine while it is a personal prototype; move to Pro before you charge anyone.
  5. Domain + DNS: buy the .com, manage its DNS on Cloudflare, and connect it to Vercel.
  6. Login: add Clerk, or use Supabase Auth and skip Clerk.
  7. Email: add Resend for welcome and password-reset emails.
  8. Payments: build Stripe Checkout in test mode; switch to live keys only after a test payment works end to end.
  9. PostHog + Sentry: add both before your first real users, so you see what they do and what breaks.
  10. Upstash and Qdrant (or pgvector): only when you need caching, rate limits or vector search.
  11. n8n: automate the repetitive work last, once you know which work repeats.

Free-tier gotchas

  • Supabase pauses free projects after 1 week of inactivity, and the free plan allows 2 active projects.
  • Qdrant suspends a free cluster after 1 week unused and deletes it after 4 weeks.
  • Vercel Hobby is for non-commercial personal use only.
  • Clerk Hobby shows Clerk branding and has no MFA.
  • Resend's free plan stops at 100 emails a day.
  • Sentry's free plan is limited to 1 user.
  • PostHog's free plan covers 1 project with 1-year retention.
  • A domain renews at a higher price than its first year.
  • n8n is free only when you self-host it; n8n Cloud is paid.

When you start paying

When to upgrade each tool, and the next plan's price
Vercelyou charge customersPro $20/month (includes $20 usage credit)
Supabaseyou pass 500 MB, 50,000 MAU or 2 projects, or can't accept idle pausesPro from $25/month
Clerkyou pass 50,000 retained users per app, or need MFA or no brandingPro $25/month ($20 billed annually)
Resendyou send over 100 emails a day or 3,000 a monthPro $20/month for 50,000 emails
Sentrya second person needs access, or you pass 5k errorsTeam $26/month billed annually
n8nyou want n8n to host it for youCloud Starter $20/month billed annually
Upstashyou pass 500K commands a month$0.20 per 100K commands
ClaudePro's usage limits slow you downMax from $100/month

Four numbers people get wrong

  • "Under $20 a month." Not possible with this stack: Claude Pro alone is $20, and a domain is extra, so about $21 is the floor.
  • "Vercel is free." Only for personal, non-commercial projects. Charging customers means Pro at $20 a month.
  • "A domain is $1 a month." Domains bill yearly: $11.48 for a Namecheap .com in year one, then $18.68 a year.
  • "Stripe takes 2.9%." In the US it is 2.9% + 30¢ per card payment, so a $20 sale costs $0.88, not $0.58.

Why one person can build this now

  • Carta: the share of new US startups (companies on Carta) with a solo founder rose from 23.7% in 2019 to 36.3% in H1 2025, which is +12.6 points. Carta reads it as the barriers to launching a startup falling; the data itself does not say what caused it. Source: Carta Solo Founders Report, 9 Dec 2025, carta.com/data/solo-founders-report
  • Nasdaq Economic Institute (9 Jun 2026): new US business applications have climbed sharply since early 2025, almost entirely from one-person businesses, while applications from firms likely to hire have stayed flat. Copy-paste prompts

Pick my stack (Claude or ChatGPT)

prompt 1 of 4
You are helping a solo founder choose a lean AI startup stack.
My product: [one sentence].
Who pays and how: [for example, a $20/month subscription from US customers].
Users I expect in the first 6 months: [number].

Start from this 14-tool stack: Claude Pro with Claude Code, Supabase, Vercel, a .com from Namecheap or Cloudflare Registrar, Cloudflare DNS, Stripe, GitHub, PostHog, Upstash Redis, Qdrant Cloud or pgvector in Supabase, Clerk, Resend, Sentry, n8n.

1. Tell me which layers I need for the first version and which I can skip (for example Supabase Auth instead of Clerk, or pgvector instead of Qdrant).
2. For every tool I keep: the plan I need once I charge customers, its monthly price, the free-tier limit I am most likely to hit first, and a link to the official pricing page.
3. Flag any free plan that does not allow commercial use.
4. Total the monthly cost for (a) a personal prototype and (b) the first month I take payments, with card fees as a separate line.
Do not guess prices. If you cannot check a price on the official page, say so.

Plan the build (Claude Code)

prompt 2 of 4
Read this repo, then write BUILD_PLAN.md for shipping the first version on GitHub + Supabase + Vercel + Stripe (test mode) + PostHog + Sentry + Resend. For each service give: the setup step, the environment variable NAMES it needs (never values), where each one goes (.env.local and the Vercel project settings), and a one-line check that proves the integration works. Order the steps so the app is deployed by step 3 and takes a Stripe test payment by the last step. Do not create accounts, switch on paid plans or paste any keys: stop and tell me when a step needs me.

Which free tier runs out first

prompt 3 of 4
Here is my usage for the last 30 days: monthly active users [ ], database size [ ], file storage [ ], peak emails per day [ ], emails per month [ ], analytics events [ ], errors [ ], Redis commands [ ]. My usage grows about [ ]% a month.
Compare each number with these free-tier limits (checked 18 Oct 2026): Supabase 50,000 MAU, 500 MB database, 1 GB file storage; Resend 3,000 emails a month and 100 a day; PostHog 1M events a month; Sentry 5k errors; Upstash Redis 500K commands a month and 250 MB.
Tell me which limit I hit first, roughly when, and what the next plan costs. Re-check every limit on the official pricing page before you answer, because prices change.

Commercial-use check before launch

prompt 4 of 4
List every third-party service this repo uses (package.json, .env.example, config files). For each one, tell me which plan I seem to be on and whether that plan allows commercial use, with a link to the provider's pricing page or terms. Mark anything you could not confirm as CHECK MANUALLY. Vercel's Hobby plan, for example, is for non-commercial personal use only.

Honest caveats

  • Prices and free tiers change often. Everything here was checked on 18 Oct 2026; check the pricing page again on the day you sign up.
  • The totals assume one person on each plan and usage inside the free tiers. Heavy AI coding can push you from Claude Pro to Max.
  • The Stripe US rate is from secondary 2026 fee guides, because stripe.com shows local pricing by location.
  • The n8n Cloud price is the one shown to a UAE visitor; your currency may differ.
  • Free tiers are for getting started. Read the limits for anything your business depends on (pauses, suspensions, daily caps, one-user plans).
  • This is a cost guide, not financial or legal advice.
