To track AI traffic in GA4, open Reports, then Acquisition, then Traffic acquisition, and look for the default channel called AI Assistant. It groups visits from ChatGPT, Gemini, Copilot and similar sources, so AI referrals get their own lane instead of being mixed into Referral or Organic Search. The reason this matters is one number: a Semrush study from July 2025 found the average AI search visitor was 4.4 times as valuable as an average organic search visitor, based on conversion rate. The reel below walks through that stat, why it can happen, and the three steps I use to test it on my own numbers. The presenter in the reel is an AI avatar of Hammad; the words and facts are his.
The 4.4x stat from Semrush, stated honestly
The number comes from the Semrush AI search SEO traffic study by Rachel Handley, published on 21 July 2025. Its exact claim is that the average visitor from an AI search source such as ChatGPT was 4.4 times as valuable as an average traditional organic search visitor, based on conversion rate. That is a site-level average, not a per-customer chance of buying, and the reference reel I rebuilt turned it into 'AI-referred customers are 4.4x more likely to buy', which the study does not say. The methodology is thin too: Semrush did not disclose the visit counts, the period or the site sample, and it sells AI visibility tools. Other studies land all over the place, from about 1.3x to more than 20x. So treat 4.4x as a reason to measure, not as a promise.
Why ChatGPT visitors can convert better
The plausible explanation is that people research inside the chat before they click. By the time someone lands on your site from ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini, they have usually compared options, asked follow-up questions and narrowed the choice, so they arrive further down your funnel than someone scanning ten blue links. If memory is switched on, the assistant can also tailor its answer to what it already knows about that person, such as their budget or job. ChatGPT memory is user-controllable and rolled out between 2024 and 2025, so not every AI click comes from an assistant that knows the buyer. That is the reasoning Semrush offers; it is a sensible hypothesis, not a tested result.
Step 1: check whether you show up in AI answers at all
Before you track anything, find out if AI assistants mention you. Ask ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini the questions your customers would ask, for example 'best [your service] in [your city]'. The prompt I use is on the free guide: 'I'm looking for [your product or service] in [your city]. Which companies would you recommend and why?' Note two things for each answer: are you mentioned, and are you described correctly? Repeat it monthly, because the answers move. If you are not in the answer, the GA4 channel will stay empty no matter how well you set it up.
Step 2: the GA4 AI Assistant channel and a custom channel group
Google added AI Assistant to the GA4 default channel group on 13 May 2026. Its help page lists sources like ChatGPT, Gemini, Deepseek, Copilot and Grok, with the medium set to ai-assistant. Two caveats from the same page: Google AI Overviews and AI Mode are not in this channel, they stay in Organic Search, and the channel only sees clicks that arrive with a referrer. To include more sources, such as perplexity.ai or claude.ai, create a custom channel group under Admin, then Data display, then Channel groups, and place the AI rule above Referral so it catches those visits first. The full custom channel group setup is on the resource page.
ONE TACTIC A WEEK
Why many AI clicks land in Direct
Expect an undercount. Clicks from AI apps often arrive with no referrer at all, so GA4 files them under Direct, and some AI research turns into a branded Google search later, which lands in Organic Search. That is why the channel is a floor, not a total, and why the survey question in the next step is a real complement rather than a gimmick. Do not promise anyone, including yourself, an exact AI traffic number.
Step 3: add AI to 'Where did you hear about us?'
On your enquiry or checkout form, under 'Where did you hear about us?', add an option that reads 'AI (ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini...)'. It takes five minutes and it catches the visits GA4 cannot see. Keep the field optional, and if the answer is tied to an identifiable lead, mention it in your privacy notice; in the UAE that is the PDPL and in Europe it is GDPR. From the reel: whether you run a brand, do marketing or post content like me, this one form change is the cheapest piece of AI attribution you will ever set up.
Step 4: split AI-sourced customers out and compare
Now combine the two signals: the AI Assistant channel from GA4 and the survey answer from the form. Segment those customers and compare their conversion rate, order value and time to buy against search and social. If AI-sourced customers really do convert better for you, you will see it in your own data within a few months, and that is the number to act on when you decide where budget goes. My safe rule from the reel: track AI traffic in GA4, ask customers where they found you, and test your own numbers before you shift budget.
